Its been a year since Bonnie, the short film got made. And now it is available for viewing on youtube and Vimeo:

News: had a screening at ‘Comfortable Shorts’ festival on Tuesday the 15th of Feb which was a fantastic opportunity to network and meeting other filmmakers. Got asked a few questions in the end also and wasn’t as scary as I thought! I feel inspired to make something else now, maybe a bit more meatier, chunkier than Bonnie. I realized after making Bonnie, I had so many ideas that I didn’t explore fully. I should really take my time when writing my next script. Just write it. Leave it. Look at it. Leave it for awhile and see what other ideas I have instead of rushing to make it. Every project is a learning curve and I am excited what the next project will be!

Curb Sneakers-Viral ad

Here’s a recent project completed for a ‘pretend’ client called Curb.

Target market: 18-24 years old youth

The message: Curb sneakers make life simple

The concept: The concept shows a cut out image of the sneaker which has been stripped from colour and is just a plain black and white image. This is a metaphor for simplicity and something that is uncomplicated. Youth today have so much going on in their lives, and pressures all around, and are constantly bombarded with different messages left, right and centre. This is idea for simplicity uses the black and white image and puts it on top of cluttered background so it stands out from everything else with a tag line “Simply Curb”.

Interactivity with the brand: a person who finds this ‘graffitied’ image around the city, takes a photo and downloads the iphone applications for Curb. This allows them to upload the photo on to the Curb sneakers website, put comments, rate other people work and win prizes.

Film update

Hello!

I haven’t died, still here. Decided it is time to post again to update you on my filmmaking progress!

A few weeks ago around the 20/2/2010 I filmed a short film called Bonnie. Took a month and half to organize. I wrote, produced and directed the short film and had over 20 crew and cast involved.

Synopsis: Bonnie is a short film which tells a story about Joshua and his girlfriend Bonnie on Australia day BBQ celebrations in 2015. While some think that this is just an average couple, we find out that there’s something unusual about their relationship.

The film will be sent to short film festivals around the globe.

In other news, finished 48 film festival last year (nov, 2009,) got screened at the ACMI. Our film was called Bruised. I produced and directed it. It was written by Jack Savige, a finalist of the 200 second Australia Post competition last year. Will update when film is on 48 film website. Aurevoir!

Funny Games- Michael Haneke

Funny Games (Michael Haneke). *takes a big breath* not for the faint hearted. This movie still resonates in my memory…one of those psychotic films that leave you gasping for more air because you forgot to breathe for like 5 minutes… and constantly think- what the f….thats how it made me feel. I think the thing I remember most about it was how cleverly the music became a feeling, also a character in a sense, getting inside a character’s brain, motive.. I’ll never forget the very beginning of the movie: happy family driving to their holiday destination, resonating happiness, classical music, all is good and suddenly the music becomes this heavy metal psychotic music- and they are still driving happily and its last for quite a long time..and I didn’t realize at first that this was the theme of the two psychotic guys who were about to make their holiday hell…the psychotic music would return throughout the film, showing how just how sick and twisted these killers were. It made me think we were inside the killers heads- their psychoticness…unstableness…chaotic word war 3.

The other unusual thing I noticed about this movie was the awfully long wide shots, or in general, really long shots that the director had decided to include. It frustrated the hell out of me, because at time I was thinking “shouldn’t we be getting an extreme close-up right at this minutes? People are hurting, emotions are running wild..why are we sitting there looking at it from a distance?” One long shot in particular which I remember is when the family is interrogated by the psychotic men in the living room and we are like a fly-on-the-wall but far away..viewing from a distance. It lasted for a long time.

Looking up Haneke in google, I came across this great article by Sense of Cinema. That would explain the ‘frustration’ that you get from seeing his films…

I’d say 10 for editing and 10 for directing…not a movie I’ll forget in a hurry!

Mao’s Last Dancer-Bruce Beresford

The other day (monday), I watched this wonderful movie called Mao’s Last Dancer (Bruce Beresford). Let me tell you, I am not going to forget this film in a hurry! Bruce Beresford and Jane Scott (producer) have created a masterpiece with this this interpretation of the autobiography of Li Cunxin,one of the worlds best ballet dancers. I personally went to see it because I love ballet- it has been a passion of mine since I was little. I was never able to become a dancer because I was pushed in music from an early age but I used to do a bit ballet as well. I often get excited about movies that are about ballet such as Centre Stage (Nicholas Hytner) even though this was more of personal journey of a man coming from china and the whole communism thing.

The film was structured very cleverly, slowly revealing Li Cunxin past and his passage to freedom and included a good balance of dancing scenes and narrative. The morale of the story is: nothing is impossible. If you set your mind to it, you will achieve it. Think I’ll watch again!
